This is not the usual London-to-New York crossing. Across the Pond begins in the Austrian Alps and heads north through Scotland, Iceland and Greenland before reaching the edge of the Canadian Arctic. From there, the route follows the St. Lawrence south through Québec, enters the United States at Bangor and finishes at New York Stewart. Each leg feels different: Innsbruck’s terrain, Inverness weather, Akureyri’s fjord approach, Nuuk’s exposed Arctic runway, the isolation of Kuujjuaq, the river landscapes around Sept-Îles and Québec, and finally the long descent toward New York. Remote airports. Cold weather. Limited alternates. Eight legs across the top of the world. The pond is wide. We take the scenic route.
